Writing Challenge Day 1 – Neat

The bar was smokey, dark and smelled of stale beer. I didn’t care at this point. I was wet from the rain; my head was throbbing and all I wanted was a drink. I threw my briefcase down and slung my rain-drenched coat over the chair. As I slid unto the bar stool the bartender walked my way. “What can I get for you darling?” she asked with a thick southern drawl. “Whiskey neat,” I replied. She smiled and as she placed a glass on the bar. I watched as the dark honey liquor filled the glass, 2 fingers worth. She was an experienced bartender. “Bad day?” she asked. Part of me wanted to reply with a snide remark. Hell, I am soaked to the bone, I just ordered a whiskey neat and I am pretty sure my face is set in a pretentious scowl. I decided against being an ass. Just because my day sucked didn’t mean I needed to make her day shitty as well. I look around the bar before I answer, it is pretty empty.

“How long do you have?” I asked while draining my glass. I point to the whiskey bottle, “Keep em’ coming.”  She poured me another whiskey neat, “I’m here until 2.” I made eye contact for the first time since entering the bar, “Well darling, tonight I killed a man.” She laughed, nervously. “Right, and I am the next big country act just tending bar for the fun of it,” she remarked. “You asked baby doll. Seriously. I have busted my ass for this company for 15 years, 15 years! I was in line for partner. And that fucker gave it to his nephew. His nephew who is barely out of law school and has shit for brains!” At this point, I can feel my face getting hot and my voice rising. Calm down I tell myself. I again point to the whiskey bottle. Whiskey neat number 3 down. She props her elbows on the bar and leans in closer. “So, you killed the old man because he didn’t make you partner?” she said quizzically. “No,” I laugh. “I killed the nephew. Now he has no choice but to make me partner.”

She backs up and wipes the bar down in front of me, nervously. “You are pulling my leg, aren’t you?” I smile for the first time since entering the bar. “Yes darling, I am pulling your leg. My day was not that bad,” I reply as I roll up the sleeves of my white button-down shirt in the attempt to hide the bloodstain on the cuff of the right sleeve.  “It was just a bad day at the office. Another whiskey neat please.”
